Port City of Amarin

Canonical

DM: Moiz

Summary

The eastern gateway of E'al Talas: a fortified port-city of old nobility, maritime trade, religious influence, hidden scholarship, and uneasy peace.

The port city of Amarin is best understood as the eastern hinge of E'al Talas: a port that connects the continent to foreign seas, a breadbasket protected inside its own walls, a dynastic partner of Jewel Splendour, and a city where ordinary trade coexists with hidden organisations and ancient secrets. Its political strength comes from the Greyport alliance network; its military strength from layered local and allied forces; and its narrative strength from the contrast between its relaxed public character and the dangerous roads, clandestine societies, religious ambitions, old ruins, and prophecies surrounding it.

Overview

The Port City of Amarin is smaller than Jewel Splendour but is arguably more important to the eastern geopolitics of E'al Talas. Its harbour is described as the continent's principal accessible eastern port, making Amarin the point through which sailors, travellers, goods, ideas, and technologies from eastern lands enter E'al Talas. From its docks, imported cargo moves westward into the continental road network.

Amarin combines the scale of a metropolitan trade centre with the slower rhythm of a coastal settlement. Its prosperity rests on maritime commerce, but the city deliberately maintains enough agriculture, orchards, fishing, and local craft production to avoid relying entirely on neighbouring powers for food or essential goods. The result is a city whose residents are generally described as secure and content, even though taxation remains substantial.

Geography and Strategic Position

Amarin stands on the eastern coast of E'al Talas, with Stone Mount to the north and Grimlocke Haven to the south. The surrounding hinterland is shaped by Dresdune Forest and Adrimon Forest, territories associated with the Eldath Druids and Woodland Orc tribes. Its western overland connection is the Bone Road, the long and dangerous highway linking Amarin to Jewel Splendour.

The city's eastern face opens onto Tyrel Sea and Jocasta Bay. Both waters are named for the legendary rulers King Tyrel and Queen Jocasta, who are remembered as having died defending the city from an ancient evil. Sailors traditionally honour them by casting asphodel flowers into Jocasta Bay when arriving or departing.

Off the coast lie the Chained Islands, a source of unusual fire-resistant stone used in the construction of Amarin's Blue Citadel and, according to other regional records, in monuments elsewhere in E'al Talas.

History

Amarin began as a fishing settlement before growing into one of the continent's oldest and most consequential cities. House Greyport traces its lineage to these early foundations and eventually became the city's ruling house.

Several centuries ago, Amarin's former castle was destroyed in a catastrophic dragon fire. The rebuilding became an act of international friendship: the Aetherian Elves assisted in designing and constructing a replacement from fire-resistant island stone. In the Aetherian tongue, the structure was called O'a Alari - "Friendship Forged." The name faded from common usage, and the building became known simply as the Blue Citadel.

Amarin's current political stature rose again through the marriage of Princess Assani Greyport to King Devin of House Allysum, ruler of Jewel Splendour. The union tied the great eastern and western cities together by family as well as treaty.

Government and Politics

Amarin is governed by hereditary noble succession under House Greyport. The current ruler is Ludovic of House Greyport, High Steward of Amarin. He rules with the advice of a Council of Nobles, whose members act as senior administrators and a practical check on the ruling house.

Council of Nobles

  • Berin of House Dale — Master of War; responsible for defence, the City Guards, and infantry.
  • Luthor of House Rochfort — Master of Treasury; responsible for the city's finances.
  • Andalya of House Janniser — Mistress of Trade; oversees the commerce flowing through Amarin's roads and harbour.

House Greyport's rule is competent but highly familial. Several gate commands are held by Greyport relatives, reinforcing loyalty to the ruling house while also creating the appearance of nepotism. Ludovic Greyport is described as capable and politically opportunistic, willing to play rival interests against one another when it benefits Amarin.

Foreign Relations

Jewel Splendour is Amarin's principal ally. The two cities share military, economic, cultural, and dynastic ties. Duriel of House Greyport, brother of Queen Assani, serves as Amarin's ambassador within Jewel Splendour's diplomatic quarter.

Relations with Stone Mount are cold because of an old feud, while relations with Grimlocke Haven remain a mixture of formal cordiality, suspicion, and strategic necessity. The Great Peace Treaty prevents open conflict, but does not eliminate border incidents, road attacks, or political intrigue.

The road system also puts Amarin in recurring tension with the elder peoples whose territories are crossed by human routes. The Bone Road passes through or near Sylvanguard, Satyr, Eldath, and Woodland Orc spheres of influence, and long stretches remain beyond the effective protection of either Amarin or Jewel Splendour.

Law, Defence, and Military Presence

The city's land forces are overseen by Berin of House Dale. The surviving notes place roughly 1,000 City Guards and Infantry under Amarin's defence establishment. Infantry patrol the immediate roads and outer perimeter, while City Guards maintain order within the walls and at the gates.

Amarin's alliance with Jewel Splendour adds two important external forces. The 1st Cutter Regiment operates from Barracks One and protects the maritime approaches, especially against piracy. The Order of the 9 Paladins maintains a combined chapel and barracks near the northern side of the city, giving the Temple of 9 both a military and missionary foothold in Amarin.

Religion

The most politically visible faith institution is the Temple of 9, an Amarin outpost of the Order of the 9 Paladins. Its current leader is Sir Adan Crowe, Faith Commander and Monsignor-elect. The temple's presence is both defensive and missionary, and its strict view of religious orthodoxy can create friction with other traditions.

The Shrine of Healing is a separate sacred institution built around a weathered stone artefact believed to have been created by the old gods. Pilgrims visit in hopes of healing, and the shrine is guarded by City Guards and administered by healers under Anya Moya.

Economy and Daily Life

Amarin's economy is built first on maritime trade and logistics. Eastern goods arrive at Port Amarin and are redistributed across E'al Talas. The city also sustains itself through grain, fruit, fishing, timber, leatherworking, metalwork, hospitality, education, and entertainment.

The Fields of Plenty and surrounding orchards provide a major share of the city's food. Timber from nearby forests supports woodworking, while imported goods and travellers support a diverse market in luxury services, unusual wares, lodging, performance, and information.

Amarin's people are described as generally content. The city's administration keeps essential needs available, taxation leaves many common residents with some savings, and homelessness is said to be comparatively low.

Districts and Notable Locations

Field District

The Field District occupies a large agricultural section within the walls. Grain fields and orchards dominate the area, and a large part of the population works there. Markets around its perimeter distribute local food as well as imported goods.

Western Gate

The city's busiest land gate and the western terminus of Amarin's side of the Bone Road. Merchants, dignitaries, royal messengers, adventurers, and travellers commonly enter here. Its heavy use makes it one of the most strongly guarded points in the city.

Notable NPC: Sir Erron Greyport — Knight Commander of the City Guards; nephew of Ludovic Greyport, veteran soldier, and fiercely loyal defender of Amarin.

Fields of Plenty

Amarin's principal grain fields, famous for their golden appearance near harvest. Their importance to the city's food security makes any blight, infestation, monster incursion, or sabotage a matter of national concern.

Blue Citadel (O'a Alari)

The seat of House Greyport and the centre of Amarin's government. The fire-resistant blue-hued citadel was designed with Aetherian assistance after an earlier castle was destroyed by dragon fire. Beneath it lie older cellars and dungeons associated with rumours of lost royal wealth and dangerous guardians.

Notable NPC: Ludovic of House Greyport — High Steward of Amarin; capable ruler, father of Queen Assani, and a politically opportunistic strategist.

Common District

The Common District is primarily residential and overlooks part of the harbour. It contains important craft businesses, military facilities, religious institutions, and upper-class lodging.

Northern Gate

A lightly travelled gate leading toward Stone Mount. Most traffic consists of northern tradespeople, stoneworkers, and occasional Eldath emissaries.

Notable NPC: Bernal Greyport — Knight Commander of the Northern Gate and younger brother of Ludovic Greyport; politically protected but not regarded as an especially capable commander.

Major Wood Working

The city's best-known woodworking and leatherworking establishment. It benefits from access to timber from the surrounding forests and can undertake unusually ambitious commissions.

Notable NPC: Brody Major — Master Craftsman; exceptionally talented, proud of his ability to build almost anything requested of him.

Dave's Forge

Amarin's principal metalworking forge, handling weapon manufacture, armour, repairs, and specialist commissions. Its workload reflects the needs of a fortified trade city.

Notable NPC: David 'Dave' Foyer — Master Smith; highly skilled, direct, and perpetually overworked.

Barracks One

The northern military barracks built to house the 1st Cutter Regiment. It serves as the Cutters' Amarin base and a centre for maritime military training.

Notable NPC: Lady Soraya Maier — 1st Cutter and Barracks Mistress; a talented officer with a reputation for recklessness and a strong desire to prove herself.

Temple of 9 (Amarin Branch)

A combined chapel and military barracks for the Order of the 9 Paladins. The temple is both a defensive outpost and an instrument of the Temple of 9's growing religious influence in the city.

Notable NPC: Sir Adan Crowe — Faith Commander of the Order of the 9 Paladins and Monsignor-elect of the chapel.

Jewel of the Sea Inn

An upscale inn for dignitaries, wealthy travellers, and visiting elites. Its position near military and religious institutions gives it excellent security, while its view of the harbour makes it a preferred venue for banquets and performances.

Notable NPC: Ayasha 'The Siren' Vale — celebrated resident singer and collector of noble gossip; information can often be obtained from her for the right price.

Port District

The Port District is the city's busiest and most cosmopolitan quarter. The port, schools, religious institutions, barracks, inns, entertainment venues, and centres of research are concentrated here, keeping the district active by day and night.

Port Amarin

The harbour stretches along the eastern side of the city and is the logistical heart of Amarin. Ships continually load and unload cargo and passengers under the supervision of the Portmaster, City Guards, and Cutters. The statue of King Tyrel overlooks the waters of Tyrel Sea and Jocasta Bay.

Notable NPC: Jurgen Gaudy — Portmaster; highly experienced, meticulous, and too busy for idle conversation.

Shrine of Healing

A pilgrimage site housing an ancient, oil-smoothed stone artefact credited with miraculous healing. The shrine is protected by the City Guards and administered by healers.

Notable NPC: Anya Moya — High Cleric and Mistress of the Shrine; devoted to healing but strict about the donations and customs surrounding access to the relic.

School of Navigation

A major nautical school teaching seamanship, navigation, mapmaking, maritime history, and related disciplines. Its library preserves extensive knowledge of the seas and is one of Amarin's key institutions of practical learning.

Notable NPC: Hostus Everett — Admiral of the School of Navigation; veteran naval commander known for turning almost every lesson into a sea metaphor.

The Library

To the public, this is an ordinary library. In secret, it is a thousand-year-old intelligence and research organisation whose operatives, known as Scholars, gather information on threats to humanity and act once they believe they understand those threats well enough. Tradition connects its origins to Queen Jocasta's youthful resistance activities.

Notable NPC: Alexander Riedel — the Master of Records; outwardly an irritable elderly librarian, secretly a veteran clandestine operative who believes knowledge can justify extreme methods.

The Barracks

The central barracks of Amarin's City Guards and Infantry, positioned between the southern approach and the Blue Citadel so troops can be deployed rapidly throughout the city.

Notable NPC: Adan Lono — Barracks Master; strict, disciplined, and devoted to following orders.

Sleeping Giant Inn

A cheaper, rougher counterpart to the Jewel of the Sea. Workers, adventurers, sailors, and ordinary travellers gather here for lodging, imported ale, music, and the occasional brawl. Beneath its respectable surface lies a connection to Amarin's criminal underworld.

Notable NPC: William Brahm — innkeeper and retired leader of a rogue network; unusually well connected and able to procure information or contraband.

Madam Shakti's Tent

A travelling diviner's establishment offering fortune-telling, unusual remedies, potions, and other occult services. Its proprietor is an outsider whose origins remain deliberately obscure.

Notable NPC: Viria Shakti — oracle and practitioner of patron-granted divination; able to glimpse possible futures but not necessarily alter them.

Eldwin's Orchard

Despite its name, this is not an orchard shop. It is an eccentric emporium of oddities collected from distant lands, where persistent customers may occasionally discover something genuinely rare.

Notable NPC: Rocco Eldwin — widely travelled dealer in curiosities; older than he appears and notoriously difficult to understand.

The Arena

Amarin's public spectacle ground. It hosts weekly mob football, harvest-time circuses, special gladiatorial events, and military training when no public event is scheduled.

Notable NPC: Sandro Theil — promoter, persuasive showman, and compulsive bettor.

Southern Gate

The southern route toward Grimlocke Haven passes through dangerous Woodland Orc territory. The gate sees less traffic than the western entrance but faces a persistent security threat from the road beyond.

Notable NPC: Sir Caius Greyport — Knight Commander of the Southern Gate; son of Sir Erron Greyport, newly appointed and still trying to establish his reputation.

Connections to the Wider Setting

  • The Bone Road links Amarin to Jewel Splendour and remains one of the most dangerous and politically contentious trade routes in E'al Talas.
  • Scholars of Amarin have investigated the Emon Roth region, including reports of the lost Temple of Ayarun, underground cavern networks, disappearances, and the Restless Death plague.
  • Amarin and Jewel Splendour have both posted bounties connected to the alleged beast-men and labyrinth near Mikonos.
  • The Chained Islands off Amarin supply unusual stone that appears in important monuments beyond the city, including traditions associated with the Order of Kutlenov.
  • The Library of Amarin preserves knowledge reaching into the Wild Expanse and other ancient regions of the continent.

Secrets, Legends, and Prophecy

The surviving prophecy notes identify Amarin as one of four ancient cities of E'al Talas, alongside Jewel Splendour, Ashmore, and Stone Mount. According to that tradition, each city holds a key or key-fragment whose combination can unlock a planar gate connected to the imprisonment of a powerful figure known as John John. This material appears in a separate prophetic source and should be treated as hidden or campaign-level lore rather than common public knowledge.

Beneath the Blue Citadel are the remnants of the earlier castle, including cellars and dungeons said to conceal old royal wealth, traps, and spectral guardians.

The public identity of The Library conceals one of Amarin's deepest secrets: its role as an extra-legal intelligence network whose Scholars conduct surveillance, research, infiltration, and targeted action against threats they judge dangerous to humanity.

The Sleeping Giant Inn conceals access to a rogue-network base beneath its wine cellar, making it one of the city's quiet centres of criminal intelligence.

Adventure Hooks

  • Blight in the Fields — A black mould destroys healthy crops and contaminates water in the Fields of Plenty. Its resemblance to corruption associated with Amon Erith raises the possibility of sabotage, natural spread, or something worse.
  • Something Beneath the Harvest — Monsters erupt from beneath the fields, followed by raiders using the chaos to strike at Amarin's food supply.
  • The Lost Vault of the Old Castle — Ludovic Greyport sponsors another expedition into the ruins beneath the Blue Citadel, where previous explorers have died or returned mentally broken.
  • Plague in the Forest — Eldath emissaries ask Amarin for help containing a sickness that twists woodland creatures into undead or unnatural forms.
  • Pirates of Jocasta Bay — The Cutters recruit adventurers for a trap-and-ambush operation against sea raiders operating near Amarin.
  • Cargo Vanishing at the Docks — Goods disappear from vessels while they are berthed, despite the presence of Guards and Cutters.
  • A Holy Commission — Sir Adan Crowe assigns a relic hunt, pilgrimage, or armed religious mission on behalf of the Temple of 9.
  • The Librarians Know More — A seemingly mundane research request becomes an initiation test when the secret Library decides the party may be useful.
  • A Rogue Outside His Territory — A criminal operation in Jewel Splendour points back to Amarin and to William Brahm's old underworld network.
  • The Oracle's Warning — Viria Shakti foresees a disaster connected to one of the characters, but her vision reveals consequences rather than a clear way to prevent them.
  • The Missing Emissary — A diplomatic caravan bound for Grimlocke Haven is found destroyed. Amarin soldiers and orcs lie dead together, suggesting they were attacked by a third force.
  • Restless Death — Researchers in Amarin connect a plague of zombified victims to strange substances and practices in Mitis and Milros.
  • The Labyrinth Bounty — Amarin's unclaimed bounty for the alleged beast-men near Mikonos draws adventurers toward disappearances, cannibal rumours, and a hidden labyrinth.
  • The Four Keys — An ancient prophecy suggests Amarin holds one of four keys needed to open a planar prison. No surviving public record identifies the key or where in the city it rests.
