The Frozen Spindle Mountains
CanonicalDM: Moiz
The frozen corpse of Mhelcar, the Serpent of Ice: a northern mountain chain of ancient glaciers, industrial Stonemount, hidden vigil, and a frontier increasingly disturbed by signs that something beyond the peaks is moving again.
Wiki Summary
The Frozen Spindle Mountains are Titan's great northern contradiction: an ancient corpse supporting modern machines. Mhelcar's fall created the mountains, but the societies now living beneath them increasingly understand survival through engineering, military discipline, exploration, and industry rather than primordial myth.
Stonemount embodies that contradiction. Its mills, factories, war machines, guards, and dam have made it prosperous, yet the entire city exists because two centuries ago a group of adventurers saw something beyond the north and decided the world needed a permanent eye watching for its return.
Ashmore adds movement to that watch. Where Stonemount waits, Ashmore explores. Its expeditionary forces are mapping the Titan's Teeth, searching for supply points, fighting half-giant forces, and pushing into territory whose relationship to the Frozen Spindles is still being discovered.
The old purpose is beginning to matter again. Abyssal creatures appear where they should not. Shadowstone stirs. Symbols return. The far frontier moves. For two centuries Stonemount has been the Eye of the North. The question is no longer whether it will see something coming - but what it will do when it finally does.
To the south, Grimlocke Haven adds another dimension to the region. The journey through the Shadowed Woods and across the Mystic River connects Stonemount to a city steeped in occult politics and Veil lore, while Phantom's Embrace shows that the north's dangers are not limited to ice, machines, or armies. The dead also have roads into Stonemount.

Overview
The Frozen Spindle Mountains form the great northern mountain chain of Titan. They are one of the clearest places where the geography of the modern world is understood as the physical remains of a primordial being.
In current canon, the range was raised by the fall of Mhelcar, the Serpent of Ice. His body shattered the northern landscape and left peaks that remain locked in winter. At the place where his head came to rest stands Stonemount, a city whose modern inhabitants know far more about industry and defence than they do about the titan beneath their oldest legends.
The north is now shaped by two very different powers. Stonemount is a two-century-old industrial city built to watch an unnamed danger beyond the mountains. Ashmore is a younger maritime city founded about 140 years ago by the Concordance Fleet and now sending military expeditions into the far northern frontier.
The exact map relationship between Stonemount, Ashmore, Heller's Watch, and the Titan's Teeth is not yet fixed by a canonical regional map. They are therefore treated as interconnected features of the wider northern theatre without inventing precise borders.
Mhelcar and the Making of the North
Mhelcar was one of the two primordial shapers of Titan. Alongside Melcone, the Mother of Flame, he transformed a barren world into habitable land. Melcone raised molten earth; Mhelcar cooled and hardened it, cut valleys, and tempered fire with winter.
The arrival of the New Pantheon turned that creative balance into conflict. Mhelcar and Melcone took colossal elemental serpent forms and entered the Great War. When Mhelcar fell, his frozen body became the mountains of the north.
The Frozen Spindles therefore occupy two identities at once: they are natural geography to modern engineers, miners, travellers, and soldiers, and the corpse of an ancient world-shaper to those who believe the oldest traditions.
Geography and Climate
The highest Frozen Spindle peaks remain locked in perpetual winter. Ancient glaciers descend from the mountains, feeding northern lakes and rivers. The peaks are described as clawing at the heavens and as resembling the fangs of a colossal buried beast.
Stonemount occupies one of the region's most unusual formations: an ancient supervolcanic caldera containing a glacier-fed crater lake. The city wraps itself around this natural basin, exploiting water, mineral wealth, height, and defensible terrain.
Ashmore lies in the far north on flatter coastal grassland around Rattler's River, with snow and rain common, warmer marshes to the south, and forests to the west. The expeditionary frontier beyond Ashmore grows substantially harsher, with deep snow, falling temperatures, and worsening visibility.
Stonemount — The Eye of the North
In the far north, where ancient glaciers descend from the Frozen Spindles, stands Stonemount: a city of stone, iron, fire, smoke, factories, and machinery. It is one of Titan's foremost centres of engineering and one of its finest producers of war machines.
To most outsiders, Stonemount is an industrial frontier city. To its oldest institutions, however, industry was never the city's first purpose.
Stonemount was founded approximately two centuries ago by a band of adventurers who travelled into the northern wilderness and encountered something terrible beyond the mountains. The surviving tradition never names what they saw. It records only their response: they stopped wandering, settled the mountainside, raised walls, forged weapons, established a government, and prepared to watch.
The founders called what they feared simply the Threat. They left no complete description. Their warning survives primarily through institutions, architecture, ritual, and the city's defensive orientation.
Government and the Founding Houses
Stonemount is ruled by a leader bearing the title Thane. The ruling families descend from the original adventurers who founded the city. Their names, internal hierarchy, and current officeholders are not yet established, but the inherited duty of the Thane is clear.
At every succession, the Thane swears the ancient oath:
I am the eyes and ears of the north.
The Vigil is mine to bear.
The words have survived even as their meaning has faded. Most modern citizens understand them as a statement of defence and leadership. Only fragments of the founding families' records still suggest that the oath refers to a specific danger beyond the mountains.
Industry and Wealth
Stonemount's wealth grew from its response to fear. Mines, forges, mills, guild workshops, and factories turned the settlement into a centre of engineering. Its manufacturers produce war machines unmatched across much of known Titan, while its guilds have accumulated influence far beyond the remote northern frontier.
The city's smoke-filled skyline, constant hammering, great gears, and military workshops are therefore both economic institutions and remnants of a founding doctrine: if the Threat returns, Stonemount intends to be ready.
The Vigil
The greatest structure in Stonemount is the Vigil. Officially it is a monumental dam of stone and metal whose ancient gears and mechanisms harness the crater lake to power mills, forges, factories, and other city systems.
Its second purpose is older and less openly discussed. The Vigil is a watchtower disguised as a machine. Six great towers surround the lake and connect into the city's mechanical systems. Their sightlines face the water, the island of Shadowstone, the Dark Tower, the northern passes, and the far horizon.
Every tower watches. Modern engineers maintain them because the city depends upon the Vigil. The oldest traditions maintained them because the founders believed something beyond the north had to be seen before it reached the south.
The Mountain Beneath the Mountain
Tears of Elenia / Skymirror
The glacier-fed crater lake around which Stonemount is built. Most citizens call it the Tears of Elenia, after the local legend of Avenal and Elenia. Older records preserve the name Skymirror.
Shadowstone
A dark island at the centre of the crater lake. Its position makes it the focus of several of the Vigil's towers, and recent reports of unusual activity there have revived interest in the city's oldest warnings.
The Dark Tower
An ancient tower standing upon Shadowstone. It predates Stonemount, its founders, and written local history. No known civilisation claims to have built it, and surviving records do not establish its original purpose.
The Dark Tower is one of the most important unresolved archaeological and magical mysteries of the region.
The Legend of Avenal and Elenia
One local tradition claims that the archmage Avenal once lived in the Dark Tower with his wife, Elenia. Avenal studied the strange magical properties of Stonemount's minerals. His experiments ended in disaster, Elenia died, and Avenal vanished.
The lake's modern name, the Tears of Elenia, comes from this story. Yet the older name Skymirror predates the surviving legend, and no current source proves that Avenal built the Dark Tower or even that the familiar version of the tragedy is accurate.
Defence and the Watch
Stonemount's military traditions reflect the city's founding purpose. The city believes it defends itself from monsters, raiders, hostile powers, and the hazards of the mountains. Its oldest institutions suggest those threats were always secondary to the greater northern watch.
- Glacier Guard — Watches the northern passes and serves as the first organised barrier between Stonemount and anything moving south through the high approaches.
- Peak Guard — Patrols the mountains, tracks movement across the difficult terrain, and supports the city's broader defensive perimeter.
- The Vigil — Watches the crater lake, Shadowstone, the Dark Tower, and the northern horizon through its six towers and interconnected mechanisms.
The Threat
The founders' surviving records never clearly describe the Threat. Its nature may have been deliberately hidden, lost during succession, fragmented between the founding houses, or destroyed.
What remains are preparations. The city was built. The walls were raised. Industry was militarised. The Vigil was created. The Thane's oath was preserved. The conclusion is difficult to escape: the founders believed the danger was important enough to justify an entire permanent civilisation devoted to seeing it return.
Recent events make the old warnings harder to dismiss. Abyssal creatures have begun appearing where they should not. Shadowstone has shown strange activity. Old symbols have resurfaced, and reports speak of movement beyond the northern frontier.
Mhelcar Beneath the Mountains
The oldest legends say that the northern mountains are not merely mountains at all. They are the fallen body of Mhelcar.
Few modern citizens of Stonemount know this interpretation, and fewer believe it. Industrial culture, practical engineering, and two centuries of civic history have pushed primordial explanations to the margins.
Yet current setting canon confirms the oldest layer: Mhelcar's fall created the Frozen Spindle Mountains, and Stonemount stands where his head came to rest. The separate traditions that his skull remains beneath the city or that he merely sleeps remain unverified.
Ashmore and the Northern Coast
Ashmore is the north's major maritime power and provides a striking contrast to Stonemount. It was founded around 140 years ago by the Concordance Fleet, a vast coalition of ships carrying peoples and surviving technologies from beyond Titan's previously known map.
The city was named for Admiral Kristoff Ashmore, killed during its construction. His death triggered the Black Water War against local Sahuagin communities. The city later developed into a major port linking settlements along the western coast with Jewel Splendour.
Ashmore's naval culture, airships, Marines, Old World technologies, and Galleon Guild expeditions now allow it to push into a northern frontier that land powers have barely charted.
Ashmore's Northern Expeditions
The 6th Marine Expeditionary Force operated from Heller's Watch under surviving reports associated with Captain Sabine Mertelleux. Its missions included mapping the Titan's Teeth and searching for a suitable coastal supply point for the Concordance Fleet.
The operation has been costly. Pale-skinned half-giants assaulted Heller's Watch in force, while mounted half-giant raiders repeatedly attacked supply caravans from Ashmore and at times cut the outpost off entirely.
Northern Frontier Sites
Heller's Watch
An Ashmore-supported frontier outpost used by the 6th Marine Expeditionary Force. It has endured major attacks by pale-skinned half-giants and can be isolated when hostile mounted forces sever the land supply route.
Associated NPC / Figure: Captain Sabine Mertelleux — commander named in the expedition reports.
Associated NPC / Figure: Ser Pavel Unger — officer who reported worsening weather, incoming reinforcements, missing teams, and supply problems.
The exact map position of Heller's Watch relative to Stonemount and the Frozen Spindle chain is not yet established.
The Titan's Teeth
A named northern landform or region being mapped by the Ashmore 6th Marine Expeditionary Force. Expedition reports associate it with worsening cold, poor visibility, and difficult terrain.
Current sources do not yet establish whether the Titan's Teeth are a sub-range of the Frozen Spindle Mountains, an outer spur, or a separate formation.
The Proposed Coastal Supply Point
Ashmore dispatched a team to locate a coastal landing site where the Concordance Fleet could sustain northern operations. That team failed to return in the surviving report, prompting a later party to search for both the landing site and the missing expedition.
The Half-Giants of the Far North
Ashmore's field reports confirm organised pale-skinned half-giant forces in the broader northern frontier. They have attacked fortifications in large numbers and field mounted raiders capable of disrupting military logistics.
The reports are written from an Ashmore military perspective. They confirm the attacks but do not establish the half-giants' own name, society, motives, religion, settlements, or relationship to Mhelcar or the Threat.
- Heller's Watch Assault — An attack left scores of defenders dead or wounded before Ashmore Marines and Galleon Guild allies helped hold the position.
- Mounted Supply Raids — Mobile half-giant forces have caused casualties among Ashmore's caravans and temporarily severed overland supply.
- Relationship to Stonemount — Not yet established. The half-giants operate in the northern expedition theatre, but no source confirms whether they are the same danger the founders of Stonemount called the Threat.
Northern Powers and Political Relationships
- Stonemount — Industrial Eye of the North, founded two centuries ago to watch the unknown Threat. Its ruling houses descend from the founders and its leader bears the title Thane.
- Ashmore — Young maritime power whose Concordance Fleet, Marines, airships, and expeditionary groups are extending organised exploration into the far north.
- Amarin — Maintains trade with Stonemount despite an old feud. Northern masons and tradespeople are recorded using Amarin's Northern Gate.
- Jewel Splendour — Linked to Ashmore by western coastal trade and to both northern cities by the Four Keys prophecy.
- Concordance Fleet — Ashmore's mobile maritime society and military backbone, potentially capable of supplying northern expeditions by sea or air.
- Grimlocke Haven — A southern port city with a recorded travel and supernatural-cultural connection to Stonemount. One surviving chronicle describes a journey north from Grimlocke Haven through the Shadowed Woods and across the Mystic River.
Grimlocke Haven and the Southern Route
The Grimlocke Haven chronicles establish a direct journey between Grimlocke Haven and Stonemount. The best-preserved account follows Xion, a Stonemount death cleric, who travelled south to Grimlocke Haven seeking aid during a supernatural crisis associated with the annual spirit season.
The route is described as leaving Grimlocke Haven through the Shadowed Woods, then crossing the Mystic River before continuing north toward Stonemount and the snowbound highlands. The source establishes this as a travelled corridor, but does not provide a surveyed road name, exact distance, travel time, or political jurisdiction along the entire route.
This connection makes Grimlocke Haven an important southern point of contact for the Frozen Spindle theatre, especially for travellers seeking specialists in spirit lore, shadow magick, occult knowledge, or mercenary assistance. It does not establish Grimlocke Haven as a political dependency or formal ally of Stonemount.
Shadowed Woods
An ancient and ominous forest bordering the Grimlocke Haven side of the journey. During the Hungry Ghost season, surviving accounts describe spectral apparitions, lost souls, unnatural whispers, and heightened spirit activity. The exact northern boundary of the woods is not yet fixed on Titan's regional map.
Mystic River
A broad river crossed on the journey between Grimlocke Haven and Stonemount. The source describes dangerous currents and local traditions concerning river nymphs. Its exact relationship to the rivers shown on future northern maps remains open.
Phantom's Embrace
The Hungry Ghost Festival is known in Stonemount tradition as Phantom's Embrace. During this period the boundary between the mortal and spirit realms is believed to weaken, allowing restless souls to wander more freely. Xion's account links Stonemount directly to this wider Titan spirit tradition.
The older adventure source depicts Stonemount as a small rustic settlement. That description is superseded by current canon: Stonemount is a major industrial frontier city. The festival tradition, Xion, the route, and the associated supernatural events remain usable setting lore.
Religion and Worldview
The Frozen Spindle region contains sharply different ways of understanding ancient power. The oldest Stonemount lore preserves the idea that the mountains were born from Mhelcar, but modern Stonemount culture is dominated by engineering, industry, guilds, and inherited military practice.
Ashmore is even more sceptical. Its people descend from a culture that remembers the Old World as destroyed by divine failure. Religion is generally distrusted, and the Cathedral of the Divine Order survives as a declining exception rather than the centre of civic identity.
The result is a north physically shaped by a primordial titan but increasingly inhabited by societies that explain danger through machines, fortifications, military doctrine, and expedition rather than worship.
Stonemount also preserves a spirit-focused tradition distinct from both primordial titan lore and Ashmore's religious scepticism. During Phantom's Embrace, offerings, warnings, and stories concerning restless dead take on unusual importance. The Grimlocke Haven chronicle treats the same seasonal weakening of the Veil as part of the Hungry Ghost Festival, suggesting a shared supernatural tradition across distant parts of Titan rather than a single organised religion.
Industry, Trade, and Technology
Stonemount's factories and guilds make the city one of Titan's premier centres of heavy engineering. Its war machines, mechanical systems, metallurgy, and water-powered industries are the practical expression of the city's founding need to prepare for danger.
Ashmore brings a different technological tradition: surviving Old World shipbuilding, naval artillery knowledge, rare firearms, airships, industrial workshops, and the accumulated technical memory of the Concordance Fleet.
The two cities therefore represent potentially complementary northern traditions - Stonemount's mountain industry and Ashmore's maritime technology - though no canonical alliance or industrial exchange between them has yet been established.
The Four Keys Prophecy
A separate prophecy names Stonemount, Ashmore, Jewel Splendour, and Amarin as four ancient cities, each connected to a key or key-fragment able to open a planar prison containing the figure known as John John.
The newer canon deepens the chronology problem. The current city of Stonemount is about 200 years old and the current city of Ashmore about 140 years old, yet the prophecy calls both ancient.
This is preserved as an unresolved mystery. The prophecy may refer to older sites beneath the cities, may use later names for older places, may originate from a source not bound to ordinary chronology, or may contain deliberate misdirection. None of these explanations is yet canon.
