The Wild Expanse

Canonical

DM: Moiz

Titan's greatest surviving old-growth wilderness: a forest shaped by Melcone's fall, where colossal beasts, broken earth, lost roads, ancient portals, and the memory of dragons resist every attempt at conquest.

Wiki Summary

The Wild Expanse represents Titan before civilisation could fully divide it. It is a surviving fragment of the old world where the land still expresses the consequences of titanic creation, the Great War, and Melcone's death more strongly than the laws of any modern state.

Scalemarrow and the Dragon Hunters stand at its edge as watchers rather than masters. Goliath Territory holds another part of the Dragonspine frontier, preserving a very different martial culture whose people also understand that dragons are never merely local monsters. Together with Satyr lands, Aetheria, Woodland Orc territory, and the neighbouring settlements, these cultures form a ring of competing memories and responsibilities around a wilderness that none of them fully controls. Even the Dragon Hunters - who know more about the forest than most people alive - have lost their own burial grounds, failed to locate legendary caves, left sacred formations unexplored, and discovered fissures they do not understand.

Overview

The Wild Expanse is the largest surviving untouched forest described in the Titan repository and one of its most dangerous regions. It lies south of Dragonspine and, in the legacy geographical account, stretches through the broad forest belt between Aetheria and Grimlocke Haven.

Unlike territories that were divided by roads, farms, walls, and cities, the Wild Expanse has repeatedly resisted permanent expansion. Settlements have attempted to claim parts of it, but the forest and its inhabitants have pushed back. The result is not an empty wilderness but a region whose communities of beasts, monsters, old magic, and hidden sites have developed with comparatively little human control.

The Expanse is inseparable from Melcone, the Mother of Flame. Current foundational canon places her fall across this region and identifies the landscape around her body with the Kiyanti Wilderness. The exact modern border between the named Kiyanti territory and the broader Wild Expanse is not surveyed in the surviving maps, but both are part of the same Melcone-scarred wilderness tradition.

Origins and the Fall of Melcone

Before the Great War, the forest belonged to the vast Great Expanse, the living wilderness that spread behind Melcone and Mhelcar as they shaped the young world. Water rose from the earth, vegetation spread across newly formed land, animals gathered around the new springs, and the elder peoples followed.

The Great War broke that continuity. Titanic bodies became mountain chains and scarred the once-continuous wilderness into separate regions. In current canon, Melcone fell across the Wild Expanse. Her body became part of its mountains and valleys, and her elemental essence remained beneath the earth.

The soil around the Dragon Mother's fall is described as unnaturally warm. Crimson-leaved trees grow where ordinary forests would not, and local tradition interprets those leaves as the final embers of Melcone's fire made visible in living nature. The place where her head is believed to have fallen is associated with Scalemarrow, the great Dragon Hunter settlement at the edge of Dragonspine.

The old warning survives because dragons are more than animals in Titan's mythology. They are reminders of the powers that fought in the Great War. Modern dragon sightings around Dragonspine therefore carry political and religious meaning far beyond the danger posed by a single creature.

Geography and Landscape

The Wild Expanse is characterised by dense forest, sharp elevation changes, cliff systems, hidden depressions, broken mountain approaches, and landforms that can disappear beneath the tree line. The terrain is difficult enough that even Dragon Hunters who regularly enter the region still rely on established vantage points and known routes.

The forest does not remain neatly separated from surrounding regions. Dragonspine dominates its northern edge; Goliath Territory occupies fortified snowy highlands along the wider Dragonspine approaches; Adrimon Forest and Woodland Orc influence shape parts of the approaches to Scalemarrow; Kiyanti carries Satyr territorial claims and old sacred sites; and the road south from Scalemarrow runs toward Grimlocke Haven. The result is a frontier where the Wild Expanse meets several cultures whose histories have all been shaped by dragons, old magic, and competing claims to the land.

Human roads, markers, and buildings are rare once one passes beyond the frontier. The sources repeatedly describe the forest as capable of reclaiming artificial structures. The continued survival of the Marker of Atreus is therefore treated as remarkable.

Ecology and the Dragon Mother's Influence

The defining ecological belief is that Melcone's essence seeped into the forest after her fall. Creatures found here are frequently larger, more aggressive, and more strongly driven by instinct than related species elsewhere in Titan. Dragon Hunter expeditions have recorded entire populations of beasts and monsters that appear unique to the Wild Expanse.

This makes the region dangerous, but not simply chaotic. The source portrays the wilderness as having its own stable societies of animals and monsters. Many of these creatures remain inside the old forest and do not routinely encroach upon settled lands unless disturbed, displaced, or given reason to attack.

  • Crimson-Leaved Trees — A current-canon feature associated with Melcone's lingering fire. Their red foliage is regarded as a natural tribute to the Dragon Mother.
  • Oversized Fauna — Known animal species can grow significantly larger here than in more settled forests.
  • Uncatalogued Monsters — Dragon Hunters continue to discover creatures that are not reliably known to scholars in the great cities.
  • Draconic Life — Dragons, wyverns, and other hostile reptilian creatures are central to the history of the region and to the purpose of the Order of Kutlenov.
  • Deep-Earth Creatures — Cracks in the Broken Earth have produced sightings of giant spiders and unfamiliar subterranean animals.

Authority, Exploration, and the Frontier

No city appears to exercise lasting civil control over the interior of the Wild Expanse. Its closest organised authority is Scalemarrow, whose Dragon Hunters conduct regular expeditions for reconnaissance, survival training, monster study, and dragon hunting.

The Order of Kutlenov is therefore the institution with the deepest organised knowledge of the region. Its members enter the forest repeatedly, document creatures and vegetation, maintain known markers, and compare new discoveries with older reports.

Even that knowledge is incomplete. The Dragon Hunters have found Broken Earth fissures but have not publicly shared all of their observations. They have never located Vyrurinn's legendary cave. They avoid Melcone's Jaws. The Secret Burial Ground has been lost from their own institutional memory.

Scalemarrow and the Order of Kutlenov

The frontier settlement now called Scalemarrow was founded by Atreus Kutlenov at the edge of Dragonspine and the Wild Expanse. The legacy source records that Aetheria granted Atreus land in recognition of the Dragon Hunters' role in the wars against dragons.

Scalemarrow is both settlement and military order. The old source places roughly 1,000 Dragon Hunters and 300 non-combat residents there. Daily life is highly regimented, and the city's purpose is centred on vigilance, training, reconnaissance, and the destruction of hostile dragons and related threats.

The city is governed by the Council of Atreus, whose senior generals descend from the families of Atreus's first lieutenants but still have to earn their positions through the Order's trials.

  • Galvan Naldarai — General responsible for fighters and rangers; Master of War.
  • Vaxana Paelis — General associated with the Order's monks; Lore Keeper.
  • Markis Eurister — General associated with the Order's rogues; Arbiter.

The Dragon Hunter Trials

Recruitment begins during the Long Winter's Night. The legacy source describes three extreme trials: crossing the highest Dragonspine peak in a day and night; surviving alone in the Wild Expanse while obtaining one's own food and a hunting trophy; and enduring a full day and night of martial combat. Only a minority survive and succeed.

After a period of training, a recruit's final rite is to hunt and kill a dragon. Those who succeed earn the right to bear the crest of the Order of Kutlenov and join Titan's most specialised dragon-hunting force.

Goliath Territory and the Dragonspine Frontier

The Goliath Territory is a fortified highland culture on the wider Dragonspine frontier and an important neighbour of the Wild Expanse. Most Goliaths retain a nomadic tradition, but many live within a guarded stronghold of snowy forests, mountain watercourses, watchtowers, and defended gates. Their mapped territory includes Goliath Gates, Python Pass, Viper Falls, The Academy, Arena of the Great, and Tree of Life.

Goliath culture places exceptional value on self-sufficiency, hunting skill, competitive achievement, and fair combat. Their warriors are trained to fight hard without treating cruelty as strength: striking fallen foes, taking hostages, and attacking innocents are regarded as dishonourable. These traditions are reinforced at The Academy, where Sha Ek teaches worthy students to master violence in the service of peace.

Their relationship with the Wild Expanse is defined above all by dragons. Goliath tradition remembers an ancient Snow Dragon associated with Viper Falls whose pursuit of Forah devastated Aetheria. The Goliaths have sworn to rise if such destruction threatens innocents again. For this reason, renewed dragon sightings around Dragonspine matter to Goliath Territory just as deeply as they matter to the Order of Kutlenov. The two cultures share a strategic interest in watching draconic activity, even though no formal alliance between them has yet been established.

Regional scope note: The Goliath Territory is not treated here as part of the Wild Expanse itself. It is a neighbouring highland culture on the Dragonspine frontier whose roads, patrols, legends, and dragon fears directly affect the wider region.

Major Locations and Anomalies

Scalemarrow

The fortified Dragon Hunter settlement at the edge of Dragonspine and the Wild Expanse. It serves as the principal staging point for organised expeditions into the forest and the centre of the Order of Kutlenov.

Notable NPC: Galvan Naldarai — General and Master of War.

Notable NPC: Vaxana Paelis — General and Lore Keeper.

Notable NPC: Markis Eurister — General and Arbiter.

The Secret Burial Ground

The first followers of Atreus Kutlenov included twelve Sylvanguard rangers, fighters, Goliaths, and half-orcs. After their deaths they were buried together at an unmarked site facing the Wild Expanse. The presence of Goliaths among the first followers is an early historical link between the Dragon Hunters and the highland peoples of the Dragonspine frontier. The burial ground was blessed as a symbolic protection for Scalemarrow, but the forest eventually reclaimed it and the Order forgot its location.

The surviving source states that references to the site remain in the libraries of Silvania and Amarin. The Dragon Hunters themselves no longer know where it lies.

The Wild Steppes

A system of cliffs descending in giant stair-like formations. Dragon Hunter reports suggest that multiple steppes occur throughout the Expanse. The nearest relatively safe example lies about a day's journey from Scalemarrow. Regional myth interprets the terrain as one of the scars left by the fall of titanic beings during the Great War.

The Marker of Atreus

A rare surviving human-made monument roughly two days into the Wild Expanse from Scalemarrow. It commemorates Atreus Kutlenov's first major expedition and marks a vantage point from which a large portion of the forest can be surveyed. The marker later became a starting point for a Dragon Hunter survival trial. Its continued survival against the forest's reclamation is considered extraordinary.

The Broken Earth

Deep fissures and vast cracks appear in the forest floor, comparable to anomalies near Amon Erith and Emon Roth. Satyrs preserved older reports of eerie sounds and lights from such openings. Dragon Hunters have now confirmed giant cracks in the Wild Expanse and observed giant spiders and unfamiliar deep-dwelling animals emerging from them.

At the point reflected by the source chronology, the Dragon Hunters are monitoring the phenomenon and have not yet shared everything they know with the other cities.

Cave of the Wyvern Vyrurinn

A legendary cavern said to contain the hoard of an ancient wyvern named Vyrurinn and a persistent doorway into another realm. One survivor claimed to have passed through the doorway into a demigod-like land without sickness or strife, later living almost two centuries. Repeated expeditions have failed to locate the cave.

Melcone's Jaws

A vast formation of mesas and karsts resembling rows of dragon teeth. The formation is visible from the Marker of Atreus but blends into the low forest from the direction of Scalemarrow. Dragon Hunters have never fully climbed or surveyed it, partly because the rock appears brittle and partly because the Order deliberately keeps the site off limits as a sign of respect for the wilderness and Melcone's legacy.

Associated Dragonspine Sites

Atreus's Lost Tomb

Atreus Kutlenov was entombed somewhere in the caves of Dragonspine with his symbol of office and legendary equipment. The exact location was deliberately concealed and has been lost. Expeditions seeking the tomb have reportedly failed to return.

Notable NPC: Atreus Kutlenov — founder of Scalemarrow and the Order of Kutlenov.

The Heart of Melcone

A scholarly theory preserved in the Scalemarrow source claims that a God Tear known as the Heart of Melcone may lie in the upper caves of Dragonspine. The legacy text warns that such an object could be used to call the Dragon Mother back from death.

This is a scholarly theory in the source, not confirmed setting fact.

Old Magic and Planar Instability

The Wild Expanse retains unusually strong traces of the old magic that predates modern roads and political borders. Stories from across Titan describe people entering ancient forests, finding doors or thresholds, disappearing for months, and returning convinced that only hours have passed.

Researchers disagree over the cause. Some interpret the phenomena as long-lived magical portals; others argue that the old magic of the forest can temporarily open pathways into another place or reality without a permanent constructed gate.

The legend of Vyrurinn is the strongest Wild Expanse example. The survivor's extraordinary lifespan is the principal reason the story continues to be treated as more than an ordinary traveller's tale.

Relations with Surrounding Regions

  • Aetheria — The legacy Scalemarrow account records that the elven power granted Atreus land after the wars against dragons. Later political relations are described as cooler under newer rulers, and Scalemarrow has considered seeking renewed aid when threats increase.
  • Goliath Territory — A fortified highland culture along the Dragonspine frontier. The Goliaths guard routes including the Goliath Gates, Python Pass, and Viper Falls, and their history is shaped by the ancient Snow Dragon that devastated Aetheria while pursuing Forah. Their oath to oppose renewed draconic devastation gives them a natural strategic interest in the same dragon activity watched by Scalemarrow's Order of Kutlenov, though no formal alliance is yet established.
  • Grimlocke Haven — Connected to Scalemarrow by a southern road. Older rulers cooperated with the Dragon Hunters against orc incursions, while the more recent political relationship is described as lukewarm and potentially hostile.
  • Adrimon Forest and Woodland Orcs — The northern approach near Scalemarrow lies close to Woodland Orc influence. Skirmishes involving Satyrs, Orcs, and Dragon Hunters threaten the Great Peace.
  • Kiyanti Wilderness and the Satyrs — Satyr territories lie close to the Melcone-scarred wilderness around Dragonspine. Their disappearance or displacement is treated by Scalemarrow as a strategic warning because it could alter the balance along the frontier.
  • Amarin — The Library at Amarin preserves information about the lost Secret Burial Ground and wider Wild Expanse lore. Stone from the Chained Islands off Amarin was also used for the Statue of Atreus in Scalemarrow.
  • Jewel Splendour — Dragon sightings near Dragonspine are significant enough that the great city treats them as potential warnings of wider conflict.

Important Organisations

  • Order of Kutlenov — The military order founded by Atreus Kutlenov to study, hunt, and kill dragons and related threats.
  • Dragon Hunters — The Order's field operatives and the best-organised explorers of the Wild Expanse.
  • Council of Atreus — The governing military council of Scalemarrow.
  • Libraries of Silvania and Amarin — Repositories that preserve old information the Dragon Hunters themselves have lost, including references to the Secret Burial Ground.
  • Satyr Communities — Keep older knowledge of Broken Earth phenomena and sacred wilderness sites that city-based scholars do not possess.
  • Aetherian Authorities — Historically tied to the founding of Scalemarrow and to the wider political balance around Dragonspine.
  • The Academy of Goliath Territory — A major cultural and martial institution where Goliath hunting, physical discipline, fair combat, and the principle of fighting for peace are reinforced under trainers such as Sha Ek.

Travel and Survival

Travel in the Wild Expanse is fundamentally different from travel along Titan's major roads. There are few permanent routes, most landmarks are natural, and movement is shaped by elevation, dense vegetation, territorial creatures, and incomplete maps.

  • Known Vantage Points — The Marker of Atreus and the nearest Wild Steppes give Dragon Hunters some reliable orientation.
  • Goliath Approaches — Travel near the Dragonspine frontier may pass through Goliath-controlled routes such as Python Pass, Viper Falls, and the Goliath Gates. Visitors should expect guarded approaches and a culture that judges strangers strongly by conduct, courage, and fairness.
  • Food and Water — Dragon Hunter initiation assumes that a traveller can hunt and forage without carried rations, but the trial's death rate demonstrates how dangerous that assumption is for ordinary visitors.
  • Artificial Structures — Permanent structures are exceptional. The forest is repeatedly described as reclaiming man-made sites.
  • Night Travel — The combination of predatory wildlife, broken terrain, and limited visibility makes night movement exceptionally dangerous.
  • Deep-Forest Expeditions — Those seeking Vyrurinn, Melcone's Jaws, hidden caves, or Broken Earth fissures should expect travel times to be uncertain and return routes to be unreliable.

Known Threats

  • Oversized Predators — Ordinary species may be much larger and more aggressive than equivalents elsewhere in Titan.
  • Dragons — The foundational threat around which Scalemarrow and the Order of Kutlenov were built.
  • Wyverns — Vyrurinn is the best-known legendary example, but the Dragonspine region is associated with other dangerous flying reptiles.
  • Broken Earth Creatures — Giant spiders and unfamiliar subterranean animals have been seen emerging from fissures.
  • Cliffs and Steppes — Falls, rock collapse, hidden ledges, and difficult vertical travel are major non-creature hazards.
  • Brittle Karsts — Melcone's Jaws contains unstable rock that may crumble under climbers.
  • Planar Displacement — Travellers may encounter magical thresholds that alter distance, time, or destination.
  • Political Frontier Violence — Conflicts among Scalemarrow, Satyrs, Woodland Orcs, neighbouring states, and the Goliath frontier can spill into roads and wilderness approaches. The Goliaths are not presently established as enemies of Scalemarrow, but both cultures react strongly to dragon threats and territorial instability around Dragonspine.

Secrets, Rumours, and Unresolved Mysteries

  • The Secret Burial Ground — Exists in the old records but has been lost to the Order that originally created it.
  • Vyrurinn's Doorway — The wyvern's cave has never been found, leaving both the creature and the claimed demigod realm unverified.
  • The Broken Earth — The Dragon Hunters know more than they have publicly released. Its depth and wider network remain unknown.
  • Melcone's Jaws — The Order has chosen not to investigate the formation fully. Whether the area is truly unremarkable is therefore unknown.
  • Atreus's Tomb — Its hidden location and the fate of previous search parties remain unresolved.
  • The Heart of Melcone — A theorised God Tear in the upper Dragonspine caves that may contain a fragment of Melcone's power.
  • The Returning Dragons — Recent sightings near Dragonspine revive the oldest warning in Titan: the return of dragons may herald the return of war.
  • The Forest's Resistance — No source explains whether the Wild Expanse's ability to reclaim structures is ordinary ecological persistence, old magic, Melcone's influence, or some combination of all three.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Burial Ground Returns — A storm tears open part of the forest and exposes carved stone that may belong to the twelve lost founders of the Order.
  • Trial of the Long Winter's Night — The party is asked to accompany or secretly observe Dragon Hunter initiates during their survival trial.
  • The Marker Has Moved — Veteran hunters insist the Marker of Atreus now overlooks a different valley than it did last season.
  • Something Below the Broken Earth — A fissure widens near a known route and the Dragon Hunters request help tracking creatures that escaped from below.
  • Vyrurinn's Survivor — A traveller appears carrying an object matching the two-century-old account of the wyvern's mysterious realm.
  • The Cave That Wasn't There — A previously surveyed cliff suddenly contains a dark opening that does not appear on any Dragon Hunter map.
  • Climb Melcone's Jaws — Someone has ignored the Order's prohibition and disappeared among the brittle karsts, forcing a rescue into forbidden terrain.
  • Crimson Leaves Turn Black — The red-leaved trees associated with Melcone begin dying in a line that advances toward Scalemarrow.
  • Dragon on the Horizon — A confirmed dragon sighting near Dragonspine triggers alarms in both Scalemarrow and Goliath Territory. The Dragon Hunters want the creature tracked immediately, while the Goliaths fear a repeat of the ancient Snow Dragon catastrophe that devastated Aetheria.
  • The Closed Goliath Gates — The Goliaths seal their approaches toward Aetheria after signs associated with the old Snow Dragon appear at Viper Falls. Merchants, diplomats, and travellers are stranded while Scalemarrow asks whether the warning is superstition or the first sign of a returning draconic threat.
  • An Honour Hunt — Goliath hunters pursue a dangerous creature into the edge of the Wild Expanse and request Dragon Hunter assistance. The expedition becomes a test not only of survival but of two very different martial codes: Scalemarrow hunts to eliminate threats, while the Goliaths insist that strength without fairness is dishonour.
  • The Missing Satyrs — Scalemarrow asks outsiders to investigate Satyr disappearances before Woodland Orcs move into the empty territory and destabilise the frontier.
  • War on Adrimon Road — An ambush leaves Dragon Hunters, Satyrs, and Orcs dead together, with evidence suggesting none of the three groups started the battle.
  • Atreus's Tomb — A newly found record narrows the founder's burial place to three upper Dragonspine caves.
  • The Heart of Melcone — Competing scholars, dragon cultists, and Dragon Hunters race toward a cave believed to contain the legendary God Tear.
  • The Forest Reclaims the Road — An important route from Scalemarrow vanishes beneath explosive new growth in a single night.
  • A Door Without a Wall — A luminous doorway appears between two ancient trees and remains open longer than any recorded Wild Expanse phenomenon.
  • The Silent Guardian Stirs — Tremors beneath Scalemarrow and unusual heat in the soil revive fears that Melcone's corpse is not as inert as history assumes.
  • The Hunt Goes Wrong — A Dragon Hunter patrol pursues a dangerous creature into the deep forest and discovers that it is fleeing something even larger.
